Trump Overruled the Governor
What Trump’s Federalization of the National Guard Tells Us About the Road Ahead
Yesterday, for the first time in 60 years, a sitting U.S. president activated a state’s National Guard over the objections of that state’s governor.
President Trump signed an order invoking 10 U.S.C. § 12406 to federalize 2,000 California National Guard troops and deploy them to Los Angeles — not in response to a natural disaster or external threat, but to suppress immigration protests sparked by ICE raids.

Let that sink in.
He overruled an elected governor.
He sent troops into a state without permission.
To control protest.
And he’s calling it “restoring order.”
But this is not order.
This is how authoritarianism flexes.
This Isn’t Normal — It’s a Test
This is the same Trump who applauded violence against protestors in 2020. The same Trump who cleared Lafayette Square with tear gas for a photo op. The same Trump whose agents pulled people into unmarked vans in Portland. This is his playbook — and now he’s running it in broad daylight with full federal backing.

This isn’t about broken windows.
It’s about breaking the system.
This order bypassed California’s leadership. It ignored community voices. It turned a protest into a battlefield. The use of military force against Americans, particularly immigrants and their allies, is a direct challenge to the idea that power in this country should be accountable.
It’s Not Just LA
This is a warning shot to every state and every movement.
If Trump can override a governor to silence protest in one city, what stops him from doing it again? What stops him from doing it in your city? What stops him from federalizing forces to protect himself, not the people?
The answer is us. We stop him.
🛠 What You Can Do
📞 Call your state reps and demand they condemn this overreach. Ask where they stand on the federalization of state troops.
📣 Organize or attend protests in solidarity with LA — but bring legal observers and safety plans.
✍️ Write to your local papers: call this what it is — a power grab, not a safety measure.
🤝 Support immigrant rights organizations in California and beyond: CHIRLA, RAICES, National Day Laborer Network.
This is a line in the sand.
He crossed it.
The only question now is: do we let him draw another?
