Protest Isn’t Enough. So What Can We Do?
A reader asked a question that’s on a lot of minds right now:
“Trump is ignoring the courts. Congress is caving. He’s tested military force against civilians. Protests get brushed off. So what do we do? What actually works?”
Here’s the hard truth: Protest alone won’t stop a rising authoritarian. But giving up won’t either.
This is where real resistance begins.
1. Local Power Is Still Power
You don’t need to control Congress to make a difference. Run for something. Support candidates in school boards, city councils, sheriffs, DAs. These offices decide whether to enforce illegal orders. They can protect our communities.
2. Organize Beyond Protest
Don’t just show up. Build something. Create local networks—mutual aid, legal defense, rapid response teams. When the government fails us, we protect each other.
3. Disrupt the Systems That Feed Authoritarians
Already boycotting? Good. Now take it further. Call out companies funding extremism. Target them with coordinated campaigns. Hit them where it hurts: money and reputation.
4. Practice Strategic Nonviolence
Marching is one tactic. But sustained resistance means blocking unjust systems from functioning. Learn how others have done it—Gene Sharp’s work is a roadmap.
5. Document Everything
When brutality comes, they’ll try to hide it. Don’t let them. Film. Write. Expose. The truth is our weapon. Shine a floodlight on every abuse.
6. Prepare and Protect Each Other
Know your rights. Use encrypted tools. Make emergency plans. Store important documents. Secure your devices. Do it now. Not because you're paranoid—but because you're ready.
7. Keep Voting—Then Stay Loud
Voting is not the end. It’s the minimum. Organize for voter protection. Help others register. Fight voter suppression. Down-ballot races matter more than ever.
Authoritarianism wins when we freeze. When we think we’re too small, too late, or too alone.
But history tells a different story.
Millions of people working together—locally, strategically, and fearlessly—can stop fascism. They’ve done it before.
And we can do it now.
