“Do Something!” But What? How to Fight Back Against Authoritarianism
It's everywhere. Scroll through social media after another outrageous move by Trump, and you’ll see it’s people shouting into the void: “Do something!”
It’s born out of frustration. The pace of authoritarianism is relentless, and the institutions that should act as guardrails-Congress, the courts, the media-are being systematically weakened or filled with loyalists who won’t push back. So when we see yet another act of corruption, cruelty, or abuse of power, the call to do something feels urgent.
But I can imagine the average citizen, exhausted and overwhelmed, reading those words and thinking: Do what?
That’s the real problem, isn’t it? It’s easy to feel helpless when so many levers of power seem out of reach. Authoritarianism thrives on making people feel that resistance is futile, that nothing we do will matter. And that’s precisely why we can’t give up.
The truth is, there are things we can do-practical, effective actions that disrupt authoritarian power, build resilience, and fight back. We just have to be deliberate and strategic.
Here are 20 concrete ways to push back against authoritarianism:
Political & Civic Engagement
1. Call and Write Your Representatives - They keep track of public pressure. Demand accountability, push for hearings, and let them know we’re watching.
2. Attend Town Halls and Public Meetings - Ask tough questions. Don’t let politicians dodge responsibility.
3. Run for Local Office or Support Pro-Democracy Candidates - Authoritarians seize power from the ground up. We need to take it back the same way.
4. Monitor and Challenge Election Interference - Volunteer to protect elections, report voter suppression, and fight for fair access to the ballot.
5. Join or Form a Local Activist Group - Organizing works. Find like-minded people and take collective action.
Media & Information Warfare
6. Combat Disinformation in Your Circles - Gently challenge misinformation, provide sources, and help people recognize manipulation.
7. Support Independent Journalism - Subscribe, share, and fund reporters exposing corruption and authoritarian tactics.
8. Use Your Voice on Social Media - Push back against propaganda, amplify truth, and make sure authoritarians don’t dominate the narrative.
9. Expose and Shame Corporate Enablers - Public pressure works. Hold companies accountable for funding or enabling authoritarian policies.
10. Educate Yourself and Others on Authoritarianism - Read, study history, and recognize the patterns before they escalate further.
Building Community Resilience
11. Strengthen Local Mutual Aid Networks - Authoritarians want us isolated. Build strong, self-sustaining communities that help each other.
12. Protect the Most Vulnerable - Support those being targeted-legally, financially, or with direct action.
13. Create Safe Spaces for Political Dissent - Provide places where people can meet, strategize, and organize without fear.
14. Document and Record Abuses of Power - Video evidence matters. Witness police brutality? Voter suppression? Document it and share responsibly.
15. Boycott and Divest from Authoritarian Supporters - Money talks. Don’t fund businesses that back authoritarianism.
Tactical Resistance & Direct Action
16. Engage in Peaceful Protest and Civil Disobedience - Mass, sustained action disrupts power and forces a response.
17. Prepare for Government Crackdowns - Learn digital security, protect your data, and prepare for restrictions on protests or speech.
18. Support and Defend Whistleblowers - Those inside the system exposing corruption need our protection.
19. Volunteer for Legal Defense Funds - Authoritarian policies are often fought in court. Support the organizations doing that work.
20. Never Normalize Tyranny - Stay vocal. Keep speaking out. Don’t let exhaustion or fear silence you.
Resistance is a Long Game
None of these actions will “fix” things overnight. But that’s the point-authoritarianism wins when people stop fighting. Resistance isn’t just one dramatic moment; it’s a sustained, ongoing effort.
If you’ve ever felt helpless, start here. Pick something from this list and commit to it. Then pick another.
Because when we all do something, we become impossible to ignore.
What’s one action you’re taking right now to fight back? Drop it in the comments-I’d love to hear from you.
