I started Dispatches from Kentucky because I didn’t understand what was happening in our country or what I could do about it.
So I started researching, learning, and writing. I figured other people were probably asking the same questions I was.
I’ve learned a great deal since then, but I still wonder what ordinary people can actually do about some of the things we’re witnessing.
And lately, I’ve been wondering whether I’m doing enough to help my readers answer that question.
I don’t want Dispatches to be just another source of political information. There’s plenty of that already.
I’d like to have more conversations with the people reading what I write.
So let me ask you something.
When you read about what’s happening in our country, what’s most difficult about figuring out how to respond?
I’d genuinely like to know what you’re thinking. You can reply directly to this email. I’ll read your responses, and I’d welcome a conversation.
I don’t have all the answers. That’s part of why I started Dispatches in the first place.

The big one for me is a feeling of powerlessness as a single individual. I read each days news with horror and trepidation. I try to amplify progressive ideas. I plan to vote. But it's hard not to wonder how much impact an individual can have. (From a fellow Kentuckian, in Louisville.)
